- Ever notice a blogger who has forgot to uncheck a the Uncategorized category when writing a post? Haven’t we all done that at least once? Well, in the next version of WordPress it shouldn’t be an issue anymore as it will automatically deselect Uncategorized when selecting another category, but until then we have deUncategorize.
The whole purpose of this plugin is to deselect the default category set under Options → Writing (Uncategorized per default) if any other category is selected while writing or editing a post. JavaScript needs to be enabled and I’ve tested this using Safari and Firefox using WordPress 2.0.4.
Check it out at cinnamon thoughts.

- There is this really cool thing called the SIMILE Timeline, which is a “JavaScript based website widget that displays an interactive timeline of events”. Check it out at the SIMILE website.
Then go to freshlabs and get the plugin to have one on your blog.
This plugin integrates the SIMILE Timeline with WordPress. It displays posts from a specific category in the timeline widget. You only need to add < !–similetimeline– > to a WordPress page or post.
It is such a neat idea, and if the plugin works well (let me know), then this could be a great way to show off life events.

- GhettoPixel has a new WordPress plugin that is an AJAXified contact form.
GPixel-Contact is an AJAX based contact form that has many end-user options available (mostly in design and message notes.) With the ability to class-it-up as always you can change style and class information easily via its options page in the admin pane. With a clean, slick and easily integrable design that will fit into any persons website its sure to help you obtain more contacts because of its ability to send emails without having to refresh the page.
Sounds like a great idea to me, as I try to create a more streamline presentation in my sites.
Download it from GhettoPixel.com.

- Boy, developments do come quick. Just a few hours after our earlier post about WebSnapr preview and thumbnail tools, XSBlog has released its Snapr plugin for WordPress. This eliminates the need for a user to manually upload the javascript and image file to the server and define the script paths.
Snapr simply integrates WebSnapr-Script in your WordPress blog … After downloading … extract copy the complete folder “XSD_Snapr” with all included files into your wordpress plugin directory “/wp-content/plugins/” and activate the plugin in the Admin-area.
To enable WebSnapr Preview Bubble you have to include
class=”previewlink”
in your link. It should look like
<a class=”previewlink” href=”http://url”>linktext</a>
That’s all.
This sure makes life simpler, doesn’t it?

- WordPress plugins are an ever changing thing. Someone comes out with a better plugin to do the same task as another plugin all the time, and so it always interests me to see who is using what to run their sites.
John Chow recently put up his top ten list, and there were some on there that seemed pretty interesting to me like Optimal Title and Digg This.
Others, were what you’d expect, like Akismet, Google Sitemap Generator, and the WordPress Database Backup.
Check out his full list and don’t forget to mention if you know a better plugin to replace the ones he is already using.

- Garrett Murphey has created a plugin that lets users decide what pages are added to the navigation of a site called Page Link Manager.
under the current version of WordPress, to exclude a pages from site navigation, you have to go into the source and do something like wp_list_pages(’exclude=3,7′). And, if you add other pages you don’t want listed in the site navigation, you have to go into and edit the source each time. This became an obstacle recently when my sister and I began looking at WordPress as a viable content management system for clients’ use. It seemed silly to us that each time the client wanted to include an excluded page or exclude a new page they’d have to call on us, or we’d have to teach them some elementary programming skills. And so the Page Link Manager Plugin was created.
An interesting idea, and anything that makes controlling pages easier is a thumbs up in my book. Check it out at Garrett Murphey’s site.

- For all of you that used to go to wp-plugins.net to find WordPress plugins, you should check it out again, as they have revamped their site. New design, new coding, and it looks good. I think it still needs a more social approach to really kick it off well, so all of you out there thinking of making a WordPress plugins or theme site, there is still a wide open niche that if done right, you could be bringing in some big traffic.
A few things I noticed about the new wp-plugins.net is that they don’t host the files locally, meaning if a plugin creator has abandoned his site, the download link no longer works and it did not seem like there was a way to contact them to let them know. Oopsies…
Well, the new WordPress Plugin Database still works really well, besides the small things, so check it out.

- Relying on a SurveyGizmo account and API, the SurveyGizmo plugin still seems rather interesting.
The SurveyGizmo plugin for WordPress gives you the best of both worlds. Use SurveyGizmo to build powerful, sophisticated and custom styled surveys, but stay in WordPress to monitor responses. The plugin also makes it easy to quickly edit, preview, or grab your publishing links.
It puts a survey tool inside the WordPress dashboard, allowing you to take stock in your users answers without ever leaving your admin console. I’d love to see some reviews on this plugins, so give it a test, and let me know how it goes.

- Those of us old enough to remember the Web back in the 1990s would recall how popular guestbooks used to be (okay, guilty here). Here’s where people got to meet and greet and leave feedback in the time when websites were still static. These days, though, the concept of guestbooks might seem moot, with the instant comment/reply features of blogs and forums. But you might still want a place for your readers to just meet and greet, or just to relive the good ol’ Web 1.0 times.
With WordPress, this could actually be done quite easily by creating a page using a template particularly modified to support commenting (as illustrated here). But if you don’t have time to tweak, you can try the Guestbook Generator plugin from Alleba.com
Features:
- No files to edit. Just upload the plugin, activate it then run the generator.
- Guestbook template seamlessly integrates with your current theme.
- When changing themes, simply run the generator to create the necessary files.
Like a true-blue guestbook, entries are arranged from newest to oldest.- Remember the time when guestbooks were the “in” thing? Hopefully this plugin will bring back the ol’ days. Hehe.
Here’s a sample–alleba.com’s own guestbook.
Yep. Bring back the good ol’ days!

- Looks like we have made it to another Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Aye, today be Talk Like a Pirate Day! On this fine day, everyone can talk like a pirate all day long. ‘Tis a fine way t’be speakin’, and if ye’ disagree I may make ye’ walk the ol’ plank and send ye’ ta’ ol’ Davy Jones’ Locker!
That’s right. The day where blog posts barely make any sense. If you are looking to join in on the fun, try out Dougal Campbell’s Text Filter Suite which includes a pirate filter.
Please comment if you have gone ahead and talked like a pirate. I would love to see some serious articles done up all pirate style for the day.
